Heartland Ranch
Spectacular Views of Harney Peak and access to the Heartland Expressway are thekey attributes of the Heartland Ranch.
This five hundred-acre property fronts on the new Heartland Expressway just southof the Highway 16 direct route to Mount Rushmore and the primary Black Hills parks andrecreation sites. This intersection of all major routes to the Black Hills isdestined to be the most prominent crossroads in South Dakota. The property will be akey site for businesses serving Rapid City's future expansion along the HeartlandExpressway and the Southeast Connector. Its commanding views, infrastructure accessand size give it a commanding position for future malls, corporate expansion orhospitality destinations.
Most of the large parcels of open land around the southeast expansion vector of RapidCity and even on out past Ellsworth Air Force Base, some fifteen miles east, has beensnapped up for personal open space or for long-range high-quality planned development. At present, there is some open land adjoining the property that can be acquired toincrease the dominance the Harney Peak Ranch maintains over the region's growth.
At present, the property is beautiful rolling pasture with a number of stockdams and anew stockwater pipeline. There is a small barn with a new roof and partiallyremodeled corrals on the frontage area of the property. City services are nearby. An intermittent tributary of Rapid Creek passes through the western portionof the property as well. It shares the access and Black Hills views that keynote theHarney Peak Ranch as a whole.
This land lies along the original stagecoach road into Rapid City and overlooks BlackGap a couple of miles south. The rugged terrain and narrow defile at Black Gap madeit the choice location for stage robbers in the early days. This location was aboutequidistant from Rapid city and the first stage station at Hermosa, South Dakota, sixteenmiles to the South. It was easy to blockade the laboring teams "pulling theGap" and slip away through the rough country to the Badlands or the Black Hills. Russ Madison rode the stage into the Black Hills on his way to join his father in1885.
The founding members of the Harney Peak Ranch's family heritage came to the Black Hillsfrom Buffalo Gap and passed over Black Gap and the lands of the Heartland Ranch. Theearly stage coaches and wagons made their own trails around the muddy ruts of previoustraveler and many indentations mark the passing of the early wagon wheels. Thisland, with its key access to Black Hills visitors, history and setting could be the area'smost spectacular wild animal preserve and park to show Americ's bison, elk and antelope intheir true natural home.
This strategic location near the most important visitor intersection in South Dakotacan be adapted to any number of elite usages. It is one of the few sites with thesize and location to host the future large retail venue for the key southeast developmentvector along the new Heartland Expressway and it's Southeastern Connector from Interstate90. Heartland Center would eventually become a central business location as RapidCity expands along it's only available growth direction.
