Brennan Valley Ranch: Privacy, Protection and Harney Peak

The spectacular Harney Peak view shown above is from Brennan ValleyRanch.

It is certainly a key asset but this property is home to features you cannot findelsewhere.  This valley spans the expanse of the historic Brennan Valley for one fullmile.  Protecting ridges provide both shelter and permanent privacy to enjoy theBlack Hills splendor.   Brennan Valley is named for John Brennan, Black Hillspioneer and founder of Rapid City in 1876.

South Dakota is home to America's most abundant and expansive grasslands.  The Texas cattle drovers craved South Dakota's "hardgrass" rangelands butcould not enter until the Sioux had mellowed in the early 1880s.  When they did,Brennan, or Warbonnet SD became the railhead for the great herds.  The shelteredvalley with its rich soil delta was the ideal holding place for the herds as they waitedtheir turn to be worked and loaded on the rail cars.

Today, Brennan Valley Ranch retains it's protected views of Harney Peak and shelteredlocation astride the valley delta.  The Brennan Valley contains a unique fragment ofSouth Dakota Badlands Wall along the south valley boundary.  The northeast corner ofthe property contains rolling highlands ideal for protected, private residential viewsites.

What is particularly unique about the Brennan Valley Ranch's view and Privacy is it'slocation just minutes from the significant cultural and service amenities of Rapid City,South Dakota.

This scenic valley, with its classic setting and access to the "Gateway to theBlack Hills" visitor base, has the potential to become the area's most accessiblewildlife raising and viewing enterprise.  The new Heartland Expressway directconnection to Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills brings most visitors right by the ranch'strue western valleys. The Black Hills are the central focus point of the American Bisonrevival.

Bison have survived today primarily because they were preserved here by ScottyPhillips, brother-in-law to Crazy Horse.  The Black Hills hosts the Annual BuffaloRoundup and Auction at Custer State Park and the prestigious bison show and auction at theGreat Black Hills Winter Stock Show and Rodeo in Rapid City.  "Dances WithWolves" was filmed in South Dakota; key locations surround the Harney Peak Ranch.  What better location to showcase America's western wildlife?

The Brennan Valley Ranch has one last key asset.  This valley is perfectly suitedfor a strategic lake site.  The Brennan Valley has been studies for sixty years as aprime reservoir location.  While this location is would provide the Brennan ValleyRanch with beautiful lake views, a more efficacious alternative would be the constuctionof a smaller private lake (at a fraction of the cost) on the ranch property.

The valley is well suited for such a lake that, combined with the location and setting, would make the property the most desirable residential location in the area.  Thispotential lake location is a key component of the value inherent in the superior value ofthe property.    An appreciation of the lake's potential can be viewed inexcerpts of the recent Brennan Lake Study announcement below.  The ranch also sharesa 581 acre water right with the Loveland Ranch unit above and has an extnesive network ofcanals and a stockwater system.

Support pools for new lake

Proposed recreational reservoir gains important state andfederal backing.

By Bob Mercer Capital Bureau

PIERRE - Sixty years on the drawing board, a reservoir project thatwould create a 685-acre recreation lake just outside Rapid City is gaining importantsupport at the state and federal government levels.
Originally, Brennan Reservoir was planned as the third in a series of reservoirsthat captured and stored water from Rapid Creek and its tributaries. Pactola and Deerfieldreservoirs were built in the Black Hills.  But Brennan, to be built off-channel aboutfour miles southeast of Rapid City, never went beyond the study stage since the 1930s.
"This is the first time in some years that we are looking at a new waterdevelopment project," board member John Loucks of Rapid City said.
The reservoir's normal capacity would be about 16,500 acre-feet of water, enough to supplyirrigation needs for two years in the valley. But the demand for recreation likely wouldmake it a popular spot for the public, Lindquist said.
People travel a long way from Rapid City.  If you put a reservoir that size withinfour miles of Rapid City, the only way to keep people out is fence it and gate it,"he said.
